I had been using Google Analytics and Sitemeter to track visitor stat on my websites since 2 years. Since Google Analytics does not provide live data which Sitemeter provides, and Analytics historical data is better than that of Sitemeter, both the trackers combined served my purpose. Recently I noticed that Sitemeter used to install an Adware which connects to dg.specificclick.net without my consent and since there was no way to block it, I removed Sitemeter from my websites. I don’t know whether it was coincidence or Sitemeter Adware removal effect, my click rates for AdSense Ads started increasing after the removal of Sitemeter!

Because I got rid of Sitemeter, I was deprived of Live Visitor Data and started hunting for other trackers. My websites are hosted on Wordpress, and then I stumbled upon a good tracker plugin called Wassup! But to my surprise, Wassup was showing that my website is having almost double the hits than what Sitemeter and Google Analytics were showing! Since Wassup gives live data and it shows exactly how visitors come to my sites, the data was accurate! All that meant was Google Analytics was giving wrong data which is actually hard to believe considering the track data of Google products. But its a truth anyways.

There was one thing that is common in both Google Analytics and Sitemeter. i.e. both are based on Javascripts and not all browsers have Javascripts enabled by default because javascripts pose security risks. But since the difference was almost double, javascript alone doesn’t explain the delta. If any of you can analyze it, let us know.

Despite its ease of usage, in Gmail, there is no single click solution to view all the unread mails. But there is an easy indirect way by using Gmail’s search. Here is how.

  • Click on "Show search options" beside Search buttons on the top of the page. This will display a search options form.
  • In the "Search" combo box, "All Mail" would be selected by default.
  • Click on the down arrow and select "Unread Mail".
  • Leave rest of the boxes blank.
  • Now hit the return key or click the "Search Mail" button. It'll display all the unread mails.

Recently a friend of mine had asked me to repair a system which was simply refusing to boot! When the system is started it was throwing a simple error message that "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system". Thats it.. Nothing further. I'm not much aware of what caused this problem in the first place. Since BIOS was coming up, I thought there must be some problem with the Windows XP itself. So I tried to use the "Repair" option that is available in the Windows XP installation CD. But to my surprise, Windows XP gave an error that it did not detect any hard disk and asked me to make sure whether hard disk is connected with the system!

Even though I remembered all the jokes about Microsoft error messages, I felt it might be hardware issue and I was thinking of asking my friend to contact the HP customer support if I fail to fix this. Anyways since it seemed like problem with the hard disk, I carried out Hard Disk Diagnostics test through BIOS. It showed that test is passed and hard disk is alright! But while the tests were going on the hard disk indicator on the notebook was not blinking at all. So I was bit unsure of the diagnostic tests.

And then I searched on the net with the error message and then I got the one-click solution!

That is by invoking HP Recovery software by pressing F11 before BIOS comes up! Then it re-installed Windows XP on its own and the system was up!

After HP Recovery completely reinstalled XP, drivers had to be installed. Then I inserted the HP CD which contained all the drivers. Autoplay started driver installation and it installed many drivers. Audio was working and graphics was just ok ok. I thought all the drivers might have been installed correctly. Then I went to Device Manager to just confirm. Alas! There were some 10-15 unknown devices! Then I saw that network was not working(both wired and wireless). Modem was not working. In fact, other than audio, nothing was working and the system was pathetically slow.

It was then I realized that the driver CD that HP has distributed had contained the wrong drivers. The NIC in dv2000 is Intel Pro. But it had installed Realtek driver! Almost all the drivers it was the same case. Then I referred to my own blog post, Windows XP Drivers for HP Pavilion dv2000 CTO Notebook and installed all the drivers except audio driver as it was working and I was bit reluctant to mess up with audio drivers.

But still modem was not working!

Then I checked on this notebook which audio driver it had installed. It had installed some other driver. But as per my blog it was Conexant. Then it flashed me what might be the problem with modem driver!

It was because Modem Audio device will be in High Definition Audio bus and Microsoft's Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver was installed on this notebook by the HP drivers CD and so since the Bus driver was not installed, XP was unable to detect modem device.

The solution was simple.

  1. I installed Microsoft's UAA driver. Link can be found in Windows XP Drivers for HP Pavilion dv2000 CTO Notebook
  2. Then I installed Conexant HDA Driver
  3. And then I did Windows update. Windows update automatically detected Modem driver and then downloaded and installed it!

Now there is no unknown device in the Device Manager and system is very fast too!
